Housing as a Human Rights Issue

On March 30, 2007 the Senior Tenants & Landlords Reconciliation Project hosted James Berry, Human Rights Specialist, from the NYC Commission on Human Rights. Mr. Berry gave a lively presentation about housing being a human rights issue. He educated and spoke with seniors living in rent-controlled and rent-stabilized housing; and he also spoke with seniors who are interested in purchasing their homes or apartments about how to utilize human rights laws to protect their consumer rights as renters and owners.

Ms. Rice thanks Mr. James Berry.

Leslie Wyche, representative from Councilwoman Inez Dickens' Office, comments on the importance of making the connection between human rights and housing.

Mr. Berry answers tenant's questions.
Joel Weiner, Head of Pinnacle Inc., informs seniors that they have a right not to purchase their apartments and to pursue SCRIE, an entitlement program that helps low income tenants pay their rent, Marjorie Moore and Florence Rice are seated to his immediate right and community tenant to his left.
